Cutting tools, chips and rotating assemblies can fail violently. Keep doors and guards in place and prove out within documented machine and tool limits.

Start with the part, not the brochure

Define the largest and smallest parts, materials, tolerance, finish, annual quantity, setup frequency and inspection method. A machine that looks impressive may be a poor fit if it creates excessive setup time, cannot hold the needed tooling, or lacks local support.

Verify the complete system

The useful machine is the machine plus control, options, workholding, tooling, coolant or extraction, metrology, software, postprocessor, training, power, air and service. Missing pieces can cost more than the apparent discount.

Document before committing

Record the exact model, serial number, control version, option list, spindle and taper, axis travels, table or chuck capacity, electrical requirements, machine weight, included tooling and known defects. Save listing photographs and seller statements.

Compatibility first

For thread mills, verify machine interface, size range, gauge length, clearances, holder or spindle requirements, coolant delivery, speed and balance limits. Similar-looking tooling is not automatically interchangeable.

Rigidity and runout

Minimize unnecessary stickout and stacked interfaces. Clean mating surfaces, use suitable torque and measure runout where it matters. Tool life and finish often reflect the entire assembly rather than the cutting edge alone.

Inventory discipline

Give assemblies stable IDs and record holder, tool, insert, projection, offsets and intended operations. Consistent assemblies reduce setup errors and make replacement decisions faster.

Marketplace research

Compare complete descriptions, photographs, included tooling, freight terms, control condition, and seller history. A listing title is not an inspection report.
